Piles (Hemorrhoids): Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Options
Piles — medically called hemorrhoids — are swollen veins around the anus and lower rectum. They are very common, especially after the age of 40, but many people delay getting help because of embarrassment. Understanding the causes and treatment options makes it easier to act early.
What Are Piles?
Hemorrhoids are cushions of veins that everyone has around the anal area. They become a problem when these veins swell or get inflamed. There are two main types:
- Internal piles — inside the rectum; usually painless but may bleed
- External piles — under the skin around the anus; can be painful and itchy
What Causes Piles?
The main cause is increased pressure on the veins in the lower rectum. Common triggers include:
- Straining during bowel movements
- Chronic constipation or diarrhea
- A low-fiber diet
- Sitting for long periods, especially on the toilet
- Pregnancy (pressure from the growing uterus)
- Heavy lifting
- Being overweight
Symptoms to Watch For
- Bright red bleeding during or after bowel movements
- Itching or irritation around the anus
- Pain or discomfort, especially when sitting
- Swelling or a lump near the anus
- Mucus discharge
When to See a Doctor
Any rectal bleeding should be checked by a doctor — not because it is usually serious, but because bleeding can also come from other conditions that need to be ruled out. See a doctor promptly if:
- Bleeding is heavy or does not stop
- There is severe pain or a hard, tender lump
- Symptoms do not improve after a week of home care
- You have changes in bowel habits along with the symptoms
Home Care and Prevention
- Eat more fiber (vegetables, fruits, whole grains) and drink plenty of water
- Do not strain and do not sit on the toilet for long
- Stay physically active
- Warm sitz baths can ease pain and itching
Treatment Options
Most piles improve with lifestyle changes and simple remedies. When they do not, a doctor may advise medicated creams, in-clinic procedures for persistent internal piles, or surgery for severe cases. A general surgeon can assess which option suits your situation.
The General Surgery department at Munir Hafeez Medical Center, Gujranwala, evaluates and treats common ano-rectal and abdominal surgical conditions.
